Cops commence drive against motorists involved in rash and negligent driving

Four persons arrested within a day; Cases booked against the accused at Margao and Colva Police Stations

MARGAO: In the view of  the four  deaths reported last week including those of two police constables on duty at Seraulim  and a couple at Raia, police have commenced a drive against the motorists involved in rash and negligent driving under the influence of  liquor.

Police said four persons were arrested within a day as cases were booked against the accused at Margao and Colva Police Stations under Section 185 of MV Act and Sections 279 and 336 of the IPC.

“We have received a circular from our senior officers directing us to book cases of rash and negligent driving,” said a senior police officer.

According to police, the rising number of fatal accidents involving private vehicles in the last few months and incidents of reckless driving by motorists under the influence of liquor have caught the traffic cops and policemen in Salcete on the wrong foot.

A senior traffic police officer said, “The accident wherein a private vehicle claimed the lives of two police constables attached to the Colva Police Station  was followed another accident on Gandhi road at Raia which killed a couple from Curtorim. This was followed by a couple of minor accidents reported in Salcete particularly in Margao.

Milind Naik, a local said “Bus operators were   involved in rash driving and unauthorised halts in the middle of the road to collect passengers which resulted in such accidents.”

A senior traffic police official said “We attached buses and other vehicles involved in gross traffic rule violations at the concerned police stations for a day or two. This was done as the fine amount is quite minimal. We have also started posting personnel in uniform to record incidents of rash driving and other traffic rule violations.”

Special drives aimed at nabbing the motorists involved in frequent traffic rule violations under the influence of alcohol will continue, the police officer added.
