PANJIM: Giving priority to women’s safety, following the outrage over sexual assault on a seven-year-old Vasco student, Goa police have further intensified patrolling in the vulnerable areas and begun traveling in buses to counter crimes against women. In addition, police control room vans are stationed near the schools during peak hours.
Deputy Inspector General of Police O P Mishra said the department has identified vulnerable areas, in north and south Goa. “District superintendents of police have identified vulnerable points where we are further intensifying patrolling on motorcycles and vans,” Mishra told Herald.
During a security review meeting earlier this month, it was decided that policemen would travel in buses so that women are not molested or are subject to rude behaviour, among other measures to ensure security for women.
North Goa SP Vishram Borkar said that policemen are randomly traveling in the buses to check the security of women. “We don’t have enough staff for this exercise but we have ensured that there is no comprise on the safety of women,” Borkar claimed.
Similarly, PCR vans are being positioned near schools and premises are being checked. The officer said that every police station is running women’s help desk 24×7 and the women helpline number 1091 is handling women distress calls on priority.
