PANJIM: Goa Police has introduced a ‘Traffic Sentinel Scheme’, inviting citizens to be the traffic watchdogs to curb the increasing number of accidents.
Under the scheme citizens have to register as traffic sentinels and report traffic violations by sending photographs or video clips on a dedicated whatsapp number – 7875756110.
Goa Police DGP Muktesh Chander said, “Many traffic violations go unnoticed so citizens can participate in reporting these violations as it will increase the sense of traffic discipline amongst road users because they will feel that anyone can record the violations and report to the police.”
Citizens will be awarded with points for the violations they report. Points will be awarded based on the type of violations with 10 points being the maximum. On accumulating 100 points, the traffic sentinel will be rewarded with cash Rs 1000. Chander said that the Traffic Sentinel Scheme was first introduced in Delhi when he was the Special Commissioner of Police. “I have also proposed to have a bumper prize for the highest number of points and give a two-wheeler as the bumper prize. The modalities will be decided later,” he added.
