Cops launch drive against beggars, evict vagrants littering Margao footpaths

MARGAO: Taking notice of O Heraldo’s report about beggars thriving in the commercial town of Margao, the police on Tuesday started a drive and cracked the whip on the vagrants occupying the footpath at Lohia Maidan.

In its March 17 edition, O Herald had raised the concerns of the 18th June Kranti Din Committee, which has appealed to authorities like the police and Margao Municipality to launch measures to rid the town of the beggary menace.  Several beggars had taken refuge behind Kamat Hotel and beside the renovated retaining wall of the historic Lohia Maidan for the past several days.

The vagabonds at Lohia Maidan can also be seen littering the footpath and even drying their clothes on the newly painted retaining wall of Lohia Maidan.

“Yes, we have started a drive against the beggars creating nuisance in public places. Many were produced before the court,” said Tulsidas Naik, Police Inspector, Margao Town police station, adding that the issue needs to be tackled at a higher level.

Avinash Shirodkar, President of the 18th June Kranti Din Committee said that he had urged the police to act against the homeless people who live around Lohia Maidan, leaving the place filthy.

“I request the police to keep a vigil on the beggars and ask the concerned authorities to find a more permanent solution to this serious issue,” said Shirodkar.
