PANJIM: Goa Police are looking out for the human trafficker linked with smuggling young women to Goa from Odisha. According to reports, a man from Goa is involved in trafficking over 200 young women from Odisha to Goa on the assurance of giving them a good life and then pushing them into the flesh trade.
Speaking to Herald, North Goa Superintendent of Police Umesh Gaonkar said he will verify the facts, which have not been communicated officially to Goa Police by Odisha Police.
“There is a possibility, but most of the rescued girls from Goa are either from the outskirts of Mumbai or Delhi, but it may be that they were diverted or relocated from there” Gaonkar said.
Gaonkar added that the Odisha population in Goa can be noticed only on Sunday as they go to Church without fail and are later seen in public places.
Deputy Inspector General of Police Crime R V Renganathan said Goa Police have not received any official communication from Odisha Police and he was not aware of any such report. However, he said that if they get any information it will be treated on priority.
The women trafficking link to Goa was exposed after a 16-year old girl who gave birth last month complained to Adava Police Station of Gajapati district against a man from Goa who took her to Goa promising her parents that she will be provided with free education and a better life.
It was alleged in the complaint that the man had given some money to her parents and she was forced to work as a domestic maid where she was sexually exploited. She had become pregnant this year and he had allegedly taken her back to Berhampur and escaped.
The girl, during her interaction with a helpline, revealed that around 200 other women of Adava area have been trafficked to Goa by the same man. Adva Police are investigating the case and Goa Police are trying to verify the allegations where the State has been linked to trafficking of young women.
