Cops, netas & principals finally meet to decongest traffic around Margao schools

After O Heraldo highlighted the nagging traffic congestion in front of schools, especially Fatima Convent, a series of trial measures for two days have been suggested to decongest the area near the school

MARGAO: A joint meeting of the Margao Traffic Cell, representatives from surrounding high schools and Margao MLA Digambar Kamat mooted a two-day trial plan near the Fatima Convent High School and its vicinity.

After observing this for two days, a further plan will be drawn up. The meeting was held in response to O Heraldo report on the nagging traffic congestion in front of Fatima Convent High School, Margao.

A series of measures have been suggested to decongest the area near Fatima Convent High School, Margao.

First, the meeting took suggestions from the representatives of all the surrounding schools. Second, the meeting decided to get the traffic police to install ‘no parking traffic boards’ in the area.

Third, they decided to stop vehicles using the U-turn near Loyola High School, Margao, so as to avoid traffic congestion.

Fourth, the meeting decided to divert the traffic near the Comba flyover, to park the vehicles and thereafter walk to the school.

The meeting further decided to take into confidence members of Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) since parents are also involved.

Besides, outlining plans and strategies for improving traffic flow, alleviate traffic congestion, infrastructure improvement, enforcement of traffic regulations and safety in Margao, it was decided to make available vacant space at the old bus stand, Margao to parents, who bring their vehicles to pick up their children during school hours. 

It has been decided to denotify the old bus stand and make adequate arrangements to park vehicles. A necessary notification will be issued in this regard, it was informed.  

A vacant space in front of police quarters at Comba was also considered for parking. All these vacant spaces would be submitted to the committee for further discussion.

According to the information available, the meeting decided to  route the traffic from SBI, Margao branch straight in front of Margao police station and proceed further.

Police sources said that no vehicles will be allowed to pass through the usual route between 1 pm and 2 pm and no vehicles will be allowed to enter the old bus stand during the above one-hour timing.

The traffic congestion was regularly witnessed near the narrow lane bordering the Fatima Convent High School, near the Margao Police Station and the railway gate at Comba.

Besides Kamat, DySP (Traffic) Prabodh Shirvoikar, Margao SDPO Santosh Desai, Margao Traffic Cell PI Sanjeev Dalvi, motor vehicle inspectors from Department of Transport were also present for the meeting.

Margao MLA Digambar Kamat said, “We have also informed the parents, traffic wardens and principals of Fatima and Loyola Schools about the suggestions. We will try to implement it as soon as possible. Both schools will follow different timings after school hours and parking space will be made available in front of Margao Police Station for parents.”
