PANJIM: Amidst allegations that the bhang party at Colvale Jail also had meat served to some inmates and prison staff, Mapusa Police have sought custody of main accused Anil Bhuye, an under-trial prisoner, for allegedly smuggling the cannabis drink inside the jail premises.
Police are also probing whether meat was served along with bhang, and if it was cooked in the jail mess or ordered from an eatery outside. “We are not aware whether meat was served to the inmates and staff. We are still recording statements of the witnesses. If any such incident has happened, we will take action as per the law,” a senior police officer said.
Sources said that a huge quantum of cooked meat was ordered by another inmate from an outside agency and it was allegedly clandestinely transported in a police jeep. The Prisons Department, that suspended five staff, including assistant jailor, head guard and three jail guards on Friday, has recommended a magisterial inquiry for an in-depth investigation into the illegal celebration.
Meanwhile, Mapusa police have moved an application before the Principal District & Sessions Judge Irshad Aga seeking Bhuye’s custody. The bhang, it is alleged was offered by Bhuye, who is appointed as a cook in the jail kitchen. The Jail Superintendent had confiscated the ‘drink’ stored in a bucket and lodged a police complaint at Mapusa police station that thereafter registered an FIR against him.
