PANJIM: Panjim Police have sought permission to close the trafficking case against Uttar Pradesh Samajwadi Party MLA Mahendra Kumar Singh due to lack of evidence.
A senior Police officer said that neither the victims’ statements, nor the medical report favoured the filing of a chargesheet against Singh who was arrested in the alleged trafficking case in 2013. The victims have turned hostile, there is a contradiction in the statements recorded by the police and that recorded by the SDM, the officer said.
He said the medical report of all six victims, including a minor, showed there was no sexual intercourse. Goa Police have then sought permission from the Children’s Court to close the case.
Singh was arrested along with five others in August 2013, after police raided a dance party in Campal, Panjim. Six girls were rescued after Congress MLA Pandurang Madkaikar complained to the police. All the arrested accused were booked under the Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act and later granted bail.
Singh had denied his involvement in the offence, claiming he had been called by a friend for a birthday party and had arrived a little before police raided the place.
Then investigation officer, Police Inspector Rajendra Prabhudesai, has objected to the closure of the case in court.
