PANJIM: Traffic police will give exclusive attention to cracking down on drunken driving on the weekend. Anyone caught driving drunk will go to jail.
“It has been decided to hold a special drive on Saturday and the early hours of Sunday to book cases under section 185 of motor vehicle act for drunken driving,”, Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Suman Goyal said in a circular issued to police stations.
As per the circular the overnight drive will be held across the state at the same time. “The (checking) points have been identified considering the availability of alcometers and likelihood of booking maximum drunken driving cases,” it further states.
Goyal has said local police station in charge and traffic in charge of the areas should utilize all available resources to book maximum cases.
Two years ago the State had witnessed a major drunken driving case wherein a 30-year-old private hospital employee Shobika Gaur – driving a car – had mowed down two youngsters on a motorbike. The woman, driving on the wrong lane of D B Marg was tested positive for alcohol in the blood.
Then Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar had admitted on the floor of the House that it was a serious case of drunk driving and that driving while drunk had become an issue of major concern. He had then announced to direct stationing of alcometers outside bars, restaurants, pubs and casinos.
On New Year Eve in 2013, police driver Shripad Keni was caught driving in a drunken state after he banged the vehicle on a compound wall.
