PANJIM: In a bid to prevent misuse of mobile phone SIM cards to commit fraud, crime or terrorist related activities, Goa Police have asked cellular companies and retailers to ensure correct identity of users.
“There could be possible terror attack in the near future. Do you want to help terrorists intentionally?” SP Kathik Kashyap asked network operators, retailers, distributors and others at an awareness program on Monday.
Police have warned they will book them for negligence if the Know Your Customer (KYC) forms are not verified. “Collect all related documents, ID proof and photos of the customer before giving away the SIM card. This will help to identify the user in cases of untoward incident,” a senior officer said at the meeting.
The meeting was called in an effort to prevent misuse of KYC documents which is leading to cyber crimes and also posing a national security threat.
The police had recently encountered cases wherein alleged drug traffickers had faked identities to obtain SIM cards. Five cases were booked and many retailers arrested.
District SPs Umesh Gaonkar and Shekhar Prabhudesai were among the police officers present at the meeting.
