PERNEM: Manshiwada-Devsu, Corgao farmers along with the village panchayat on Saturday sought the State government help to construct concrete protection wall to protect their agriculture fields from saline water due to breach in the bundh.
After Cyclone Tauktae leaving a devastating trail in the State, the saline water of Tiracol River entered into the fields at Manshiwada, Devsu-Corgao due to breach in the bundh and destroyed acres of paddy cultivable land.
The farmers claimed that the existing bundh broke during the cyclone resulting in the saline water of Tiracol River entering into the agricultural land.
The farmers said that around 400 families from this locality are directly dependent on the agricultural activity and due to cyclone their only source of income is affected.
The farmers also claimed that around 70 per cent of the population of this area is engaged in agriculture activity and this is the largest farm land in the whole of Pernem Taluka, where acres of paddy are cultivated as a source of income and few cultivate for self-consumption.
Further, the farmers said that they will not be able to carry out any cultivation for this season since the saline water has completely destroyed the fields and if the protection wall is not constructed then the agricultural activity will have to be stopped completely which will also affect the livelihood of people in this area.
“We request the concerned authorities to look into the matter on immediate basis since around 400 families are directly dependent on this agriculture activity. This is one of the biggest farm lands in Pernem Taluka where paddy is cultivated,” a farmer said.
