PANJIM: The Muslim community has appealed to the Corlim panchayat to urgently make a provision for a kabrastan (burial ground) in the village.
In a letter addressed to the Director of Panchayats, the Muslim community from Corlim have highlighted difficulties faced by them in finding burial grounds to perform the last rites of their loved ones due to the lack of a designated burial ground in the village. They claimed that they travel far away to perform the last rites.
During the pandemic, the problems of Muslim community have increased due to the restrictions, they said urging the panchayat to earmark land on war-footing so that the rights of the community are protected.
As per the status report submitted to the Goa Human Rights Commission (GHRC), only one cremation facility exists for the Hindu community and no other provision exists in the village. Around 20 Muslims reside in the jurisdiction of the Corlim panchayat, who are facing the problem of non-availability of a burial ground.
The copies of the letter have been forwarded to the Secretary (revenue), GHRC, Tiswadi Taluka Block Development Officer (BDO) and the North Goa Collector, urging them to be sympathetic to their plea and to provide more land.
