PANJIM: Panjim corporator Menino D’Cruz has tendered his resignation as a member of Panjim Market Committee, which is without the chairman for last nearly three months.
In his resignation submitted to Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) Commissioner Sanjit Rodrigues, D’Cruz has expressed unhappiness towards civic body’s failure to appoint the chairman for the market committee, even as the crucial issue of signing of leave and licensing agreement with the legal vendors is still pending.
“The Panjim market issue is a talk of the town and since I raised this issue for past several years, I was obliged if I could do something on the issue; but since almost three months have passed without having a meeting to elect the chairman, it will not be possible for me to do justice as a member in solving the issue surrounding the market,” the corporator said.
He said the market committee has not even met once since its formation for the new term in March, this year.
It’s been nearly seven years since N D Agarwal exposed the alleged city municipal market shops scam in 2013. The inquiry exposed that almost 95 per cent of shopkeepers are illegal occupants. However, down the line, CCP failed to sign agreements with the legal shop owners.
