VASCO: Councillor Girish Borker is expected to be declared elected unopposed as the new Chairperson of the Mormugao Municipal Council on Friday morning.
Borker, representing ward XVI and a staunch supporter of Vasco MLA Krishna ‘Daji’ Salkar, was the sole candidate who filed his nomination for the vacant post, following the resignation of Leo Rodrigues on July 3, as per the mutual agreement among the ruling councillors backed by the BJP.
Borker submitted his nomination to Jayant Tari, the chief officer of Mormugao. A special meeting of the Mormugao municipal council has been scheduled for 11 am on Friday to formally elect the new chairperson. Bhagwant ‘Pratik’ Karmali, the Deputy Collector of Mormugao, will preside over the election as the officer in charge. Borker also stated that as chairperson, he intends to build consensus among all councillors, foster unity within the council, and work towards the development of all 25 wards.
