Councillors question CMC chief on fining market vendors improperly

CUNCOLIM:  Cuncolim Municipal Council (CMC) Chairperson Laxman Naik along with ruling councillors John Dias, Remando D’ Souza and other councillors, who visited the market on Sunday questioned Naik and grilled the Council employee for penalising vendors in wrong way.

A vendor selling his products from his four-wheeler was fined Rs 2,000 under Garbage Act. Councillor Udesh Dessai asked how CMC could fine the vendor under the Garbage act for turning four-wheeler into a cart.

CMC had also fined another vendor, who was selling readymade garments turning his four-wheeler into a display cart under Science and Technology and Environment Act. He was apparently fined for bringing his four-wheeler inside market complex. Councillor Dessai argued that CMC has no right to fine vendor for using four- wheeler as a cart and that too under environment or garbage act.

Vendors and customers present at market witnessed an open arguments between CP and Councillors.

Dias said that the council would allocate places for vendors in a planned and systematic way.
