MARGAO: A Sanguem municipal councillor, who has reportedly secured a lucrative job in the United States, is facing disqualification for failing to attend three meetings of the Council, consecutively.
This case in has raised several eyebrows in the ward represented by him, whose residents have demanded immediate reelection as they are left with no representative in the council.
Deepak Marathe had won the ward no 9 in 2015. For a good one and half year Deepak was in Sanguem, after which, he and another councilor applied for leave for a tour to United States.
The other councillor has returned; but according to sources Deepak got a lucrative job in the US and stayed back. According to Sanguem Chief Officer Pramod Desai, the leave period of Deepak expired in December and since then, he has not attended four council meetings thereby attracting disqualification.
“We had moved for the disqualification of Deepak Marathe as councilor and it has been processed. The Election Commission is yet to give its take on when to have the elections for the said vacated ward,” Desai said confirming that Deepak has gone to the United States for employment.
Meanwhile, for his action, the councillor has invited the flak from the residents of his ward. “For the people of a town, the councillor is the link between the people and the council. Our ward has no link now, therefore, we demand that the vacancy be immediately filled,” said Saish Malvankar.
