CALANGUTE: Calangute Police arrested a notorious couple from Udupi Karnataka in connection with a house-breaking and theft case at Saligao.
According to Calangute Police, accused one Gopal Nadar was arrested for allegedly attempting house-breaking and theft at Saligao. During investigation, an eye witness informed that at the time of the incident, there was one woman with the accused, who fled from the site when alarm was raised.
Police further informed that on Thursday they received information that one woman was making rounds in the courts and lawyers to bail out her husband. Police swung into action and arrested the woman outside Sessions Court at Panjim.
Police said the woman, who disclosed her name as Vijayalaxmi Nagaraj Shetty, informed that she was accompanying her husband in the theft case at Saligao and stole one camera, one handy cam, 500 US Dollars, 3,000 Australian Dollar, 1500 British Pounds and silver jewellery worth Rs 6,000.
Police said that the duo is involved in numerous property offences in Karnataka and other places.
Police further informed that the woman was instrumental in getting the accused, Gopal, escaped from the custody of the escort team. The accused was produced at Udupi District Court for trial under the escort of Kerala Police in August.
As the escort team were staying at the railway station to proceed to Kerala, the woman lured the escort team to stay in a hotel and accordingly booked two rooms, one for the escort team and one room for them. The room was locked from outside, but the duo escaped from through the window A/C hole and since then have been staying in Goa.
It was also learnt that accused Gopal has committed a murder at Udupi Sub-Jail in 2011 of another inmate, informed police.
Calangute Police recovered 1500 British Pounds, Rs 31,000, 10 Australian Dollars, one camera, a handy cam and also attached goods purchased after exchanging the foreign currency.
The police team which conducted the operation include PI Nilesh Rane, PSI Devyani Naik, HC Subhash Malwankar, Devidas Haldankar, Police Constable Vinod Naik, Vijay Palni, Girish Rawool, LPC Shital Kinlekar, Shubhada Kavlekar and Ashwini Gawas.
