PANJIM: With almost the entire Goa Police staff deployed for the two-day BRICS summit in South Goa, movement of prisoners to court and hospitals has come to a halt for three days.
The Prisons Administration informed Herald that they had received an intimation from the Goa Police on the matter and in view of it the court was informed by the Inspector General of Prison that during this time it would not be possible to take under trials to court.
Assistant Superintendent of Police of Sada Sub Jail Bhanudas Pednekar said except for taking under trials to court, all other work is being done by the prison staff. “For three days from 15 to 17 October we will not get the staff of Goa Police to escort the under trials who are in jail, accordingly we have informed the court,” Pednekar said.
Goa Police controls the escort of both the prisons in the State and in the absence of the police the prisoners will not be moved out of the prison. “Only in an emergency we will take the under trials for medical examination,” Pedenekar said.
Assistant Superintendent of Colvale jail Chandrakant Harizan said there are some staff reserved for emergencies and for three days they will have to manage with it. The regular medical examination will be postponed and court appearances will resume on Tuesday.
On Friday some of the staff were present but from Saturday to Monday there will be a complete lack of escort personnel. Interestingly, Inspector General of Prisons Siddhivinayak Naik is also on BRICS duty.
