Court grants Anganwadi helper bail

PANJIM: The Anganwadi helper, Pranali Panchal, arrested for allegedly torturing a three-year-old boy was released on conditional bail by the Children’s Court on Tuesday.

The Mapusa police had arrested her on Monday after the parents lodged a complaint accusing her of burning their son’s cheeks and beating him with wooden ruler.
Defense lawyer, Advocate Swapnil Nachinolkar said the woman had been granted bail on a bond of Rs 20,000 and a pre-condition to not leave the state or interfere with the victims and witnesses.
The Women and Child Department, which inquired into the incident, terminated the services of both, Panchal and the teacher, for failing to stop the incident and for not reporting the matter to the concerned authorities.
The victim, who is recovering from the burns, testified against the helper. Witnesses also claim Panchal would lock children in the cupboard and toilet, and even put them in boxes.
