MARGAO: Former PWD Minister Churchill Alemao on Friday asserted that the Mopa tangle cannot be resolved through the courts and disclosed plans to soon convene a public meeting at Margao to decide the future course of action on the airport issue.
Churchill made it amply clear that he does not agree with the suggestion made in certain quarters that the Mopa airport issue would be taken to the courts if the government goes ahead with the project.
Addressing the media, Churchill said he has been in touch with leaders of various political parties to come under one platform to oppose Mopa. “I cannot say for the moment when the public meeting will take place. All I can say is that the issue cannot be resolved through the courts. We have to bring the people of both South and North Goa on the streets like we did during the Konkani language agitation demanding scrapping of the Mopa airport”, Churchill said.
Reminding the media that he was the lone politician from S Goa to attend the EIA hearing on Mopa at Pernem, Churchill expressed shock that elected representatives and ministers from South Goa Avertano Furtado, Mickky Pacheco, Caitu Silva and Benjamin Silva were conspicuous by their absence. “These leaders have made it clear in the past that they are opposed to Mopa, but did not come for the EIA hearing to register their objections”, he said.
