Covid-19 deaths in India cross 5-lakh mark

NEW DELHI: India on Friday crossed the 5-lakh mark in fatalities as the Health Ministry counted the total deaths so far to 5,00,055 even while new infections in the past 24 hours up to 8 am fell to 1,49,394, which is 13% less than the previous day’s 1,72,433 and the active caseload fell to 14,35,569.

With the United States topping the list of the fatalities at 8.95 lakh, India stands second in terms of the lives lost due to the Covid-19 infection.

There were 1,072 deaths in the past 24 hours, including 441 count of previous deaths and 160 latest deaths in Kerala. The Covid-19 deaths in Delhi otherwise fell to 13, while Maharashtra had the second highest deaths of 75 in 24 hours, followed by 60 in Karnataka, 40 in Punjab, 36 in Bengal, 34 in Gujarat and 30 in Tamil Nadu.

Those contracting the Coronavirus since beginning of 2021 swelled to 4,19,52,712 while 4,00,17,088 of them have recovered, 2,46,674 of them in the past 24 hours.

The national vaccination drive on Friday saw 168.47 crore given the Covid-19 vaccine doses, 55.58 lakh of them in 24 hours ending at 7 AM on Friday while those tested for the virus reached 73.58 crore.

India’s active caseload now stnds at 3.42% of the total infections and the recovery rate at 95.39%. The daily positivity rate is 12.03% while the weekly positivity rate stood at 12.03%.
