COVID-19 positivity rate jumps to 7.22%; State records 261 new cases

PANJIM:  Goa’s COVID-19 positivity rate jumped to 7.22 per cent on Thursday, as the coastal State reported yet another single- day spike with 261 people getting infected.

In the three days alone, State has logged 543 new cases, thus taking the active case tally to 856. The daily positivity rate that was at 4 per cent two days back, on Thursday jumped to 7.22 per cent.

In view of rising COVID-19 cases, Health Minister Vishwajit Rane has asked Directorate of Health Services (DHS) and Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC) to convene an emergency meeting to discuss and suggest measures.

Health Minister has also raised concerns as he foresees the spike equivalent to the rise in coronavirus cases in April-May, this year, when the second wave hit the State.

On Wednesday, State had recorded 170 new cases of COVID-19 while on Tuesday it was 112.

Interestingly, of the total 261 cases, 260 have opted for home isolation, as per DHS update.

The day also reported one fatality while 6 patients have recovered.

Panjim Health Centre continued to report highest 120 active patients, followed by Margao (87), Cansaulim (72), Cortalim (56), Porvorim (55) and Chimbel (40).

Rane said there has been a significant jump in cases, similar to the rise that occurred in April-May 2021.

“In view of the rising COVID-19 cases, I have suggested to Director DHS and Dean GMC to convene an emergency meeting with expert doctors to suggest measures. This will help us to be in a better position to take appropriate action in light of the increasing number of cases,” Rane said.
