PANJIM: In wake of the confirmation of a tiger housed in Bronx Zoo, New York, being infected with COVID-19, the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) on Monday directed all the States to ensure “highest alert” at the zoos.

Since in Goa, the Bondla zoo and wildlife sanctuaries were closed for public since March 16 as a precautionary measure, the Forest authorities claim that there are fewer chances of human-animal transmission of virus. However, the health of animal handlers and other staffers at the zoo are being monitored every fortnight.

In a letter to the Chief Wildlife Wardens, CZA member secretary S P Yadav has pointed out that the carnivores, especially cats and ferrets and primates need to be carefully monitored.

“Zoos in the country, are, therefore, advised to remain on the highest alertness; watch animals on 24×7 basis, including CCTV for any abnormal behaviour, symptoms; keepers handlers not to be allowed in the vicinity without safety gear, preferably PPE; isolate and quarantine sick animals and have minimum contact while providing feed to animals,” the letter added.

CZA has asked the authorities to ensure that fortnightly samples of the suspect cases are sent to the designated animal health institutes to initiate COVID-19 testing, while following bio-containment and safety measures required in handling this high-risk pathogen as per the national/ ICMR guidelines.

Speaking to Herald, Deputy Conservator Wildlife Vikas Desai said that Goa had shut down its zoos and sanctuaries from March 16 onwards, in wake of the partial lockdown imposed by the State government. “Hence, there is absolutely no chance of human-animal transmission,” he emphasized.

“We have also reduced the number of animal handlers and staff at the zoo and their health is being monitored. We are taking all the necessary precautions,” he said, while adding that animals are also being monitored. Desai also said that Goa has so far reported only seven positive cases of the infection.

Official maintained that the zoo authority will take all the required steps as directed by the CZA.
