PANJIM: Close to a year after being tagged as the country’s first Green State in handling the COVID-19 outbreak, Goa is seeing the tables reversed. The State is breaking all records in daily COVID-19 cases as it hit another high – crossing the 1,000 mark – on Tuesday.
The last 24 hours saw a worrying 1160 persons testing positive for COVID-19. Similarly, the daily death count also touched a new record with 26 patients losing the battle to the virus, within a span of 24 hours.
The State reported 1160 cases – out of 3597 samples tested – the highest since the pandemic broke out last year. This has pushed the total active cases to 8241, figures which stood at 583 as on March 1. A significant jump in less than two months has raised concerns among various sectors even as frontline workers are facing a challenging task.
The total COVID-19 patients in the last over a year have been 69,312 as on date, while a total of 60,145 have also recovered. In the last 24 hours, 440 COVID-19 patients have recovered whereas 142 were hospitalised and 597 were placed in home isolation.
What has also disturbed the scenario in Goa is the sudden surge in deaths. Of the 26 patients who died in 24 hours, 16 were admitted to Goa Medical College and Hospital, eight died at South Goa District Hospital, one at the Primary Health Centre, Betki and one death was reported at a private hospital in North Goa.
Of these, one patient aged 78 years with co-morbidity hailed from Sindhudurg and another aged 72 years was in home isolation in a village in North Goa.
