COVID mayhem: 20 deaths reported on Friday

Highest single-day death toll recorded in third wave; 35 deaths reported in the last two days

MARGAO: Goa reported 20 COVID-related deaths on Friday, which marks the highest single-day death toll recorded since the COVID third wave began on December 28, 2021. This also meant that there were 35 deaths reported in the last two days.  

It may be recalled that there were 15 deaths reported on Thursday, which is also comparatively high. There were concerns when 8-9 deaths were being reported on consecutive days.

What has been most concerning to the public is that there have been 143 COVID deaths since January 1 to 28 this year. There were such high figures of deaths during the second wave also. But there were numerous occasions in the past when government reported deaths late, the actual figures of those months are not available. The total number of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic is 3,665.

On the other hand, the daily COVID positivity rate and number of daily cases being reported has continued to decline. 1,322 cases were reported on Friday while the daily Covid positivity rate is now at 28.43 per cent. The positivity rate was hovering above 40 per cent earlier.

The number of active COVID cases has also dropped down to 11,903.

54 new patients were hospitalised in the last 24 hours while another 43 persons were discharged from various hospitals during the same period. Total 4,649 persons had their samples tested during the same period as well.
