BICHOLIM, JULY 25
Merchants from Bicholim are upset over Bicholim Municipal Council’s (BMC) negligence in keeping a check over cow menace in the area.
Speaking to Herald, some shopkeepers from Bicholim market claimed that BMC never closes the gates of the market and cows enter the building during the night.
“The gates are never closed during the night and this becomes a safe place for stray animals including cows, dogs and other animals, especially during heavy rains,” informed a shopkeeper.
“In the morning, when we come we have to clean the entire area and drive them from the gates,” added the shopkeeper.
It may be recalled that theses gates were erected some years ago, after similar problems were encountered by shopkeepers in the area.
“It is surprising that the BMC has no control over cow menace in Bicholim and the problem is serious, especially during market day,” said aggrieved shopkeeper.
It may be noted that cows pose problem on the roads and even in the market. Recently, a rabies infested cow had injured about 15 persons in Bicholim on the market day, while earlier another cow died while giving birth to a calf on the road.
The deputy collector when asked earlier had assured that he would look into the matter of cow menace, but nothing fruitful has come out.
