Crane touches overhead power lines; operator dies on the spot

PONDA: In a tragic incident, Mehboob Perkewala, 35, a crane operator was electrocuted on Thursday evening when the lorry loader came in contact with overhead power lines at around 3.30 pm. Perkewala who  hailed from Maina-Curtorim was loading wooden logs into a crane mounted truck at Jofilnagar Ponda.

While loading the dry logs, into truck the crane touched the overhead high tension lines. Luckily two other workers who were standing on the dry logs on the truck while loading escaped unhurt.  The driver of the truck said he had alerted the operator about the danger of overhead lines but sadly he ignored it.

The deceased was operating a hydraulic crane mounted on a truck chasis and while lifting the dry logs the crane touched a three phase power line.

The deceased is survived by his wife and two minor children.

According to locals, the huge tree located on open space at Jofilnagar was cut few months back and on Thursday the logs were being loaded into truck for transportation. However despite knowing the fact that there is an overhead high tension line above the crane operator, the workers did not bother to ask the electricity department to shut down power supply.

Following this Ponda Police rushed to the spot and conducted panchanama. The Electricity Department officials also inspected the site.
