PANJIM: A section of the St Inez creek at Campal was cleaned by young volunteers from the area itself who toiled enthusiastically to lend a helping hand and help the creek breathe.

The project was initiated by Creek Freeks, an NGO dedicated to the cleaning and restoration of the creek.

The creek has been an eye sore for a long time and way back in 2009 the government had informed the High Court of Bombay at Goa that the work of cleaning the Sta Inez creek would be completed within the succeeding 30 days, on a public interest litigation. The creek poses a health hazard to residents of the entire area from Taleigao to Campal.

The court had set a time-bound programme for the government and the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) to initiate clean-up operations and also directed the CCP to find a site to dispose off the waste removed from the creek.
