PANJIM: The Children’s Right in Goa called for implementation of ‘foster care for children’ scheme drafted way back in 2010, since no efforts have been made to notify the same. This demand came at the day long workshop on ‘registration of children’s home under the Juvenile Justice Act in Goa’, organized by CRG in collaboration with Directorate of Women and Child department.

Addressing the workshop, Sarita Shankaran, member of Maharashtra State Coordination Committee for Child Protection, ascertained the need to register a children’s home under JJA.

Shankaran also spoke about Balsangopan Yojana of Maharashtra government, under which Rs 500 is given to the families of the affected child or those who adopt the child, so that they grow in a normal family environment.  She said that around 18,000 children are covered under the scheme.

The Juvenile Justice Act gives a mandate to every state to formulate a policy on foster care for needy children “to provide a family environment to every child who is either an orphan or whose parent or parents cannot provide him/her the care offered in a normal family environment,” A CRG member explained, adding ‘a financial support is provided to such families under the scheme’.
