Australian penalised for dog’s death
PANJIM: An Australian national Barry William has been convicted of criminal trespass, mischief, causing damage and for treating a dog cruelly resulting in his death. The order passed by the JMFC, sentenced the accused “to imprisonment till the rising of the court and to pay fine of Rs 500 for the offence punishable under section 447 of IPC (criminal trespass), imprisonment till the rising of the court and to pay fine of Rs 1,500 for the offence punishable under Section 427 IPC (mischief causing damage) and to pay fine of Rs 50 for the offence punishable under Section 11(1)(a) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. In default of payment, the accused shall undergo simple imprisonment for three days, ten days and one day, respectively. According to the prosecution, on March 3, 2008 at Susheela Building in Panjim, William was heavily intoxicated and walking on the footpath, when dogs started barking from the veranda of the house adjoining the footpath. The accused then went to abuse the dogs and put his hand inside the veranda resulting in dog bite. The accused then returned with a stick entered the veranda and attacked the dogs with a big club. One of the dogs later died. Imprisonment till the rising of the court means till the end of the court’s day business.
Murder accused taxi driver remanded
VASCO: The prime accused in the murder of a fellow taxi driver has been remanded to six days in police custody. The accused Ulhas Pednekar was produced before the Vasco JMFC, after he was arrested in connection with the murder of Jostline D’Costa (32) of Sanguem outside a hotel in Arrosim. When asked for a motive for the murder, Verna police said they would be able to ascertain the motive only after interrogating the accused. It may be recalled that Pednekar, a taxi driver by profession, allegedly stabbed D’Costa to death on Friday afternoon, after a heated argument broke out between them outside a hotel at Arrossim.

Nuvem local found dead in Zuari River
VASCO: A 60-year-old man from Nuvem was found dead in the mangroves of the Zuari River near the old Sancoale church on Saturday. According to Verna police, Antonio Remedios Braganza had gone missing on April 17 and his family had filed a missing complaint at the Maina Curtorim police station. A Verna police team along with family members were conducting a search for Braganza, when they found his scooter near the Zuari Bridge at Cortalim. Suspecting that Braganza may have committed suicide by jumping over the Zuari Bridge, police intensified their search and later found the body floating around the mangroves at about 12.15 pm. After an autopsy, Verna police handed the body to the relatives of Braganza for final rites. PSI Hiru Kavlekar of Verna police station is investigating the case.
