Margao: The pandemic, which resulted in a lockdown, had its effect on the crime scene in South Goa as the number of cases has reduced quite significantly but what is heartening is that the crime detection rate by the police has increased tremendously.

In the year, 2019 altogether 1,667 major crimes were reported in South Goa of which 1,554 were detected. In the year 2020, of the 1,100 cases reported 955 were detected; thus achieving a crime detection rate of impressive 93.22 per cent as against the rate of 86.81 achieved in 2019.

While 19 murder cases were reported in 2019, there were 13 murders in 2020 and all have been detected. Attempt to murder saw a slight increase as only 14 cases were reported in 2019; while in 2020 there were 15 such cases. Incidentally, all the murder and attempt to murder cases have been detected.

Significantly all the four culpable homicide cases reported in 2020 have been detected; while in 2019, not a single case of culpable homicide was registered.

In 2020, there were 22 rape cases reported, of which 21 were detected. While in 2019, there were 31 rape cases reported and all the accused were nabbed. Not a single dacoity case was reported in 2020 while one such case was reported in 2019.

While house breaking for theft cases decreased significantly probably because people were mostly at home, robbery cases increased. In 2020, eight robbery cases were registered as against only 4 registered in 2019.

The drop in house breaking cases is significant as in 2020 only 9 cases of house breaking during day were registered; as against 19 such cases that were registered in 2019. In both the years, only four of them were detected. House breaking during the night appears to be the offenders favourite choice, as 36 such cases were registered in 2020 of which 16 were detected while in 2019 altogether 41 cases were registered, of which 19 were detected.

Theft cases have also decreased as in 2020 only 12 house theft cases were registered, of which 6 were detected; while in 2019 there were 17 cases registered of which 12 were detected. Similarly, auto thefts also decreased as only 69 were registered in 2020 of which 34 were detected; while 107 vehicles were stolen in 2019, of which only 62 were detected. There were only 6 cases of house trespass in 2020, as against the 18 registered in 2019.

There were only 9 chain snatching cases reported in 2020, of which 9 were detected; while in 2019, there were 19 chain snatching cases reported, of which 12 were detected. Other thefts saw a marginal increase as there were 68 cases reported in 2020; while in 2019 there were 67 cases. Interestingly in both years 60 cases were detected by the police.

While only 24 cases of rioting were registered in 2020, there were 38 such cases in 2019. Interestingly, 14 cases of unlawful assembly were registered in 2019 and 2020. While all the 16 cases of kidnapping registered in 2020 were detected; only five of the 25 such cases registered in 2019 were detected. There were 15 cases of assault on public servant in 2020, as against the 19 such cases in 2019.

Probably because of restrictions in movement, accident cases have also dropped drastically in 2020, as only 72 fatal accidents were registered; as against the 102 fatal accidents that were registered in 2019. Similarly only 125 other accidents were registered in 2020, as against 196 registered in 2019.
