MARGAO: Decline in crime, increase in detection rate and above all selection of Curchorem Police Station amongst the top 10 performing police stations in India by the Union Home Minister has been a big morale booster to the South Goa Police for its performance in 2018.
There is a decline in crime cases in South Goa as in 2018 altogether 1055 cases under the Indian Penal Code were registered as against 1281 cases that were registered in 2017 thus registering a decline in crime by 17.64 per cent.
In 2018, 70 heinous crimes like murder, attempt to murder, rape, dacoity and robbery were registered as against 76 such cases registered in 2017 thereby showing a decrease in heinous crime by 7.89 per cent.
As far as detection is concerned 86.54 % cases were detected in 2018 as against the 82.67 % cases detected in 2017 thereby showing an increase in detection of cases by 3.87 per cent. However, while in 2017 100 per cent of the heinous crimes registered were detected, in 2018 the detection rate of such crimes was 97.14 per cent.
Interestingly in 2018 property offences like dacoity, robbery, burglary, chain snatching, theft detection increased by 12.16 per cent as 59.92 of such cases reported were detected as against the 47.76 per cent cases detected in 2017.
Accidents have also decreased substantially as only 92 fatal accidents were reported in 2018 as against the 121 reported in 2017 thus showing a decrease by 23.96 per cent. While 215 other motor vehicle accident cases were reported in 2018 as many as 269 cases were registered in 2017 thus reducing other accident cases by 20.07 per cent.
Incidentally a whopping 1,39,371 cases were booked for traffic violations in 2018 as against the meager 44,181 cases booked in 2017 and while 806 persons were booked for driving under the influence of alcohol in 2018 only 39 persons were booked in 2017.
The police have also been quite busy in booking NDPS cases as 83 persons were booked under the Act and 18.637 gms of drugs worth around Rs. 39,00,450 were seized from them as against the 63 persons booked in 2017 and seizing 24.31 gms of drugs that were worth around Rs. 29,18,400.
South Goa police have also been striking against smoking in public places and dirtying public places. Under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act 20,321 persons were booked in 2018 and fines amounting to Rs. 20,32,100 were collected from them as against the only 7,571 persons booked under the Act in 2017.
Similarly as against the 2,991 persons booked under the Smoking and Spitting Act in 2017 as many as 12,793 persons were booked under the same act in 2018. And 348 established were booked under the Smoking & Spitting Act in 2018 for not displaying “No Smoking” boards.
Under the Garbage Act a total number of 15,898 persons were fined in 2018 as against the 5,390 persons fined in 2017.
People causing nuisance on the roadside have also been acted upon as police arrested 6,821 hawkers in 2018 as against the 3,788 arrested in 2017 and while only 323 beggars wer booked in 2017 in the year gone by 568 beggars were booked in South Goa.
In 2018 as many as 93,457 tnant verification forms were filled and their antecedents verified as against h 36,402 filled in 2017 and during 2018 1,826 Senior Citizens Forms were filled and police personnel visited their houses.
Besides, two notorious characters were externed from South Goa District by the Collector they being Seby Ferrao from Arlem Raia who recently raped a senior citizen and the other was Agostinho Carvalho from Colva a habitual thief.
Superintendent of Police South Arvind Gawas while praising his officials for the good work they did attributed the upswing to the weekly review meetings held by him where the crime statistics are discussed and analysed and also police persons are helped to solve the crime expeditiously.
