PANJIM: The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, released on Thursday, shows that for every one lakh population in the State there were 23.6 violent crimes. As the crime rate witnessed a significant drop in the last three years, Goa is ranked 28th on the list of violent crimes with 469 cases reported in 2016.
With murders listed first under the heinous crime category, a total of 30 cases under Section 302 (murder) IPC, and 12 cases of culpable homicide not amounting to murder under Section 304 of the IPC were reported in Goa last year.
Though marginally, the State has witnessed a drop in murder cases compared to the preceding years. In 2014, the cases of murder had totalled 34 which came down to 31 in 2015. This indicates that for every one lakh population, 19.9 murders took place during these three years.
The NCRB data further indicates that of 30 murder cases, the motive behind 11 cases were personal vendetta or enmity, while in two cases it was due to property dispute, five murders were for gain, three each were due to illicit relationship and love affairs, while the remaining were for other reasons. Persons aged between 30 and 45 years were the major targets while three children were victims of murder.
Likewise, 18 cases of attempt to murder under Section 307 IPC and 85 cases of grievous hurt were registered during the same period.
Interestingly, Goa is also among the safest for dowry-related cases as two cases of dowry deaths were reported last year. However, it lags behind other states and union territories like Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Sikkim, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Daman & Diu, Lakshadweep and Pondicherry where the dowry death cases are Nil.
Violent crimes in Goa also included 61 cases of rape, 106 cases of kidnapping & abduction, 117 cases of rioting, 14 robbery cases, 17 cases of arson (criminal act of deliberately setting fire to property) and seven cases of dacoity.
