Criticising ‘anti-Goan’ tax on Feni, GFP warns of launching agitation

Margao: The Fatorda MLA and former Deputy Chief Minister Vijai Sardesai has alleged that the BJP State government is planning to finish the liquor businesses of Goans in Goa.

The Goa Forward Party Chief (GFP) has warned of launching an agitation if the government doesn’t pay attention to the issues pertaining to the taxation of Feni.

He further referred to the recently concluded budget session where he questioned how taxing Feni, both coconut and cashew, was the highlight of the budget aimed at increasing revenue.

“I want to open the eyes of the government. How much is the excise revenue of Goa? At the most may be 400 crores of which 1% comes from Feni that is 4 crores. 1% segment made by Goans and made for Goans is being taxed” complained Vijai.

He called this move of the government as being against ‘Goemkars’. “The government has done nothing to improve the Feni business, which has international fame. It is a heritage drink made by Goans for the Goans and of Goans” said Vijai

“What does taxing Feni mean? It means the government only wants to finish Goans as this tax is specifically on Goans and not on outsiders. Coconut Feni production is already reduced and if you tax it that business too will finish. The geo-identification has been given to Feni and an exemption has to be given, because if not, the moves of government will finish this industry” said Vijai.

He further described it as double taxation, which he said can be challenged in the High Court.

“When you auction the hill of cashew you levy duty and now if you tax Feni this is double taxation. I feel the excise department has not put a thought to their move. The CM has for the first time opened online suggestions. Is this the effect of the online suggestions? Without having a discussion in the house, and forcing the opposition out of the assembly?” Vijai questioned

He added that if the situation continues as it is with no change in the government’s decision, then they will carry out an agitation after the carnival festivities are over.

“They want to finish the liquor industry. The BJP government wants to make Goans vegetarians in true form, taxing fish, beef etc. There was a statement somewhere that India should be a dry state,” said Vijai
