PANJIM: Two days after 12 Crosses at a cemetery in Marcaim were desecrated by unknown miscreant/s, another Cross at a private property in Chimbel was found in a damaged condition on Thursday morning. The Cross, which is over 100 years old, is located in a private property.
Sources said there are indications that the structure was damaged by cattle trespassing but taking no chance, Old Goa Police registered a case of ‘desecration against unknown person(s)’.
“We are investigating a case of desecration against unknown person(s). We are collecting scientific clues as well as recording statements of people, living around the vicinity,” Sub Divisional Police Officer Nelson Albuquerque told Herald, after inspecting the site, along with the North SP Chandana Chowdhary and local police staff.
Sources, however, said that the Chinchwadi (Chimbel) property, located about 100 metres from the road, has been closed for quite some time as the owner is out of Goa. “The place is frequented by cattle. There is a possibility that cattle hit the structure damaging the base, due to which the Cross fell on the ground. But we have asked the police to investigate the case as desecration,” a senior officer said.
Police have found cattle footprints in the area. The incident was brought to the notice of the police by a woman living in the neighbourhood.
