MARGAO: The Cross vandalism cases in South Goa especially in areas of Salcete are back. The timing of a cross being desecrated by unknown persons in Guirdolim has raised eyebrows all over the Salcete.
While the people are openly calling it an effect of election on the horizon, the police have decided to keep a strict vigil on these sensitive areas. The timing is suspicious, and the people have become cautious.
A huge crowd gathered at Guirdolim after someone discovered that a cross in a remote part of the village had a crack developed on it. Angered at the development, locals have called for maintaining vigil in the area.
Though the local have not filed a complaint over the incident, they have taken it seriously.
Meanwhile, the police have stepped up the vigil in these areas to prevent similar incidents.
“The people are not sure whether the cross was vandalised deliberately. However, the police have begun investigating the case,” said Maina Curtorim Police Inspector Harish Madkaikar. “There is special patrolling which has been put in after the incident as the road doesn’t have much activity happening on it,” he said.
Similar incidents have occurred in the village causing anguish and agitation. “The police are taking enough care to prevent such incidents,” PI Madkaikar said.
In the run up to 2012 Assembly election, many churches, crosses, temples and kabrastans were vandalised in South Goa; robberies were also reported in churches and temples.
