Tensions escalated in Calangute’s coastal belt on Tuesday as a group of Shivaji Premis staged a protest outside the panchayat office in response to a controversial notice issued by the Panchayat. The notice demanded the removal of a revered Shivaji statue within a 10-day timeframe. The protesters, seeking an apology from the Sarpanch and accusing him of disrespecting religious sentiments, demanded the withdrawal of the removal order.
The situation quickly grew intense, necessitating the deployment of a police force to maintain law and order. As the protest intensified, stone pelting ensued, accompanied by loud slogans. In response to the escalating unrest, the Calangute Panchayat decided to close its doors, prioritizing the safety of its staff and visitors.
However, in the wake of the massive protest, the order calling for the demolition of the Shivaji Maharaj statue was subsequently withdrawn. The Panchayat acknowledged the significance of the issue and announced that a meeting would be held to discuss and reconsider the resolution, providing an opportunity for further deliberation and decision-making. In the interim, the Panchayat confirmed that the letter issued on 19/06/2023 would be kept in abeyance.
