Crowds gather at Sancoale to collect clams, oysters

Vasco: Several people gathered near the Zuari river bed at Sancoale on Wednesday throwing the lockdown-related guidelines to the wind, for the collection of clams and oysters.

It may be recalled that despite the efforts of the Chicalim Biodiversity Management Committee and Vasco Police, crowds are still coming at various parts of the river. First it was Chicalim, then Dabolim and now Sancoale.

Sancoale Sarpanch Girish Pillai opined that local bodies including the police have done enough awareness about COVID-19 and that the onus lies on the people to behave more responsibly. However, he conceded that he was unaware of the fact that people had gathered in large numbers when pointed out that photos of the same had gone viral.

He reiterated that Sancoale panchayat had carried out awareness regarding COVID-19 and the prevailing guidelines in all wards and rued that such actions by people defying the lockdown efforts, were detrimental to the efforts of those on the frontline fighting to contain the spread of coronavirus.
