The Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) has issued notices to cruise boats operating in river Mandovi for discharging sewage waste into the river.
They have been asked to show cause within 15 days as to why no action should be taken against them.
Interestingly, among the violators are two government-run boats – Santa Monica and Shantadurga.
GSPCB conducted an inspection of the boats a few days ago to verify the complaints received by it that the cruise boats do not have treatment plants and that they dispose their sewage and other waste directly into the Mandovi.
The notices have been sent on the basis of the inspection reports prepared by GSPCB inspectors, sources said.
Most have kitchens and restaurants but there are no facilities to treat toilet and kitchen waste. Wet waste, however, is taken care of, the sources added.
Besides, it was also found during the inspection that used oil is discharged into the river after a gap of some months.
While Santa Monica is operating for more than 15 years, Shantadurga was commissioned during BJP Government. The others are private-run boats.
