CSIR-NIO open for the public today

ISRO Chairman Somanath S will deliver a lecture on ‘Space Redefined in the Global Context’ at the NIO Auditorium, at 3.30 pm

PANJIM: The CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), Dona Paula will celebrate its Foundation Day, on Sunday, January 1, 2023. On the occasion, the institute will remain open for the public from 9 am to 11.30 am. 

The visitors are welcome to visit the institute and view the marine aquarium that simulates coral ecosystems, models of research ships, exhibits of instruments used for oceanographic research, as well as films on ocean science and a talk on “Career in Oceanography”. Later in the afternoon, a public lecture on “Space Redefined in the Global Context” by Somanath S, distinguished Scientist and Secretary, Department of Space, Chairman, Space Commission and Chairman, ISRO is organised at the NIO Auditorium, at 3.30 pm.

Somanath has a distinguished career of nearly 36 years and has made a significant contribution to the area of space technology. He is an expert in the area of system engineering of launch vehicles. As the Director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) in 2018, the lead Centre of ISRO, he was responsible for Launching vehicle technology development. Under his leadership, VSSC has achieved significant feats like the Crew Escape System demonstration through Pad Abort Test (PAT), the launch of GSLV Mk-III M1/Chandrayaan 2, and he is spearheading the upcoming Gaganyaan mission and the development of the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV).

The talk will address many facets of the emerging global scenario of Space and its connections to the Space sector in India such as small rocket building, small satellite manufacturing and space-based applications that were being done by NGEs.
