PANJIM: The National Confederation of Human Rights Organisations, Goa Unit, Council for Social Justice and Peace, and concerned individuals have demanded an independent inquiry and suspension of Verna police officials in connection with the suicide of three members of a working class.
“Announcement by the Superintendent of Police (South) of setting up a separate inquiry by SDPO Margao, Harish Madkaikar, smacks of willful conspiracy to protect the police in uniform, because such an inquiry would also call for the role of the Deputy Superintendent of Police Mormugao, and hence a police officer of the same rank cannot be appointed to conduct a departmental inquiry,” reads a joint press statement issued on Wednesday
The group had also called upon the Goa State Commission for Protection of Child Rights to inquire into the grievance by the minor child of being picked up from near MES College, Vasco, at odd hours of the night, and being criminally intimidated at the police station.
They demanded independent inquiry and suspension of alleged police inspector in charge and the remaining officers, staff dealing with the case.
The groups have also demanded that it is imperative that an independent commission of inquiry seize all possible evidence including CCTV footage.
