PANJIM: Mining workers from Cuddegal mines, operated by Fomento Group, held a daylong hunger strike, on Saturday, against illegal retrenchment of nearly 200 employees by the company. The workers are demanding compensation in form of 50 per cent of their salary, from the State government till the time iron ore activities resumes.
Cuddegal Mines Workers under Goa Mineral Workers Union affiliated to Centre of Indian Trade Union (CITU) held a protest at Azad Maidan over illegal retrenchment. The workers claimed that they are being retrenched without any settlement of their dues by the company.
Union leader Adv Suhaas Naik said that Fomento Group has illegally retrenched the workers, who have been working at Cuddegal mining site for past many years. He said that workers are retrenched without any advance notice and the company also failed to clear their dues.
The mining workers have sought government intervention to protect their livelihood. They have demanded that till the time iron ore industry resumes, government should pay them 50 per cent of their salaries.
