CUNCOLIM: Finally the history of the 1583 revolt of Cuncolim, which was the first war fought in Asia against any foreign power, has finally been included in the class XI history textbook.
From this academic year, class XI history textbook will have a complete chapter on the history of the 1583 Cuncolim revolt. Also from next year, a chapter on the Cuncolim uprising will be included in the history text book of class IX.
The Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education has introduced a new textbook for class XI history from this academic year and emphasis has been placed on Goa’s History.
In 1583, Cuncolkars fought fiercely for their self-government against the Portuguese regime. In the bloody revolution held at Talyebhat-Kulwada, Cuncolim, five foreign religious preachers were killed.
In order to take revenge, the Portuguese invited 16 Chieftains of Cuncolim for peace talks and killed 15 of them inside the Assolna fortress. Nationalists were constantly demanding that the history of the struggle that Cuncolkars who had fought fiercely against the Portuguese power for the Liberation of the State, should be included in the school curriculum.
Finally, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant after his assurance to the Members in the Legislative Assembly instructed the Goa Board to include Cuncolim 1583 revolt in the school curriculum.
Meanwhile, the State government has decided to observe July 15, as the day to mark the Cuncolim revolt in Delhi every year.
