MARGAO: Cuncolim Union blanked Goa Velha Sports Club 2-0 to advance into the quarter-finals of all-Goa Eslinda Alemao memorial inter-village football tournament, organized by Navelim Villagers Union, at Sinquetim ground, Navelim, Wednesday.
All the goals came in the first half.
Cuncolim Union dominated the game and kept their opponents on the back foot especially in the opening session. Cuncolim Union broke the deadlock in the very 5th minute when striker Rosario Carvalho slotted past the rival goalkeeper with snap shot.
In euphoria with early success, Cuncolim Union doubled the lead in the 15th minute when Vijay Moraskar beat the rival goalkeeper with neat finish.
A lot was expected from Goa Velha after change over but they were subdued and failed to function as a cohesive unit.
Cuncolim Union had couple of scoring opportunities but their forwards wasted gilt edged chances from close range. At the fag end, Goa Velha went all out but the rival defenders thwarted their efforts with neat tackles.
