Cuncolim Residents Unite Against Pollution, Present Demands for Immediate Action

Panjim In a united stand against the growing issues of air and smell pollution emanating from various industries, a substantial number of residents in Cuncolim gathered to voice their concerns. The pollution, primarily attributed to fish mills and other local industries, has significantly impacted the living conditions in the area, prompting residents to demand three specific actions.

The concerned Cuncolikars put forward their grievances, seeking the following resolutions:

1. Joint Inspection with Top Officials: The residents have called for a joint inspection involving the Chief Minister, the Industries Minister, the Health Minister, senior officials from the Industries Development Corporation (IDC), and representatives from the Pollution Control Board. They emphasize the importance of including local villagers from Cuncolim in this inspection to provide first-hand insights into the pollution issues.

2. Fine Recovery for Violations: Residents demand the recovery of a fine amounting to 7.22 crore rupees, which was previously imposed as a penalty for violations of environmental norms by the offending companies. They stress that if these companies fail to pay the imposed fines, stern measures should be taken, including the possible closure of these non-compliant establishments.

3. Establishment of a Pollution Control Board Office: The residents have called for the establishment of a full-time office for the Pollution Control Board within the IDC premises. This step is seen as essential to ensure continuous monitoring and regulation of industrial activities to curb pollution effectively.

The gathering of concerned citizens underscores the urgency of addressing the pollution issues that have been plaguing the region. The residents expect that their demands will be taken seriously by the authorities, ultimately leading to a cleaner and healthier living environment in Cuncolim.
