MARGAO:  The 10-member Cuncolim Municipal Council on Tuesday resolved to ask the government to increase the number of wards to 12.
At the Council meeting held on Tuesday, the councillors gave their stamp of approval to a proposal seeking to increase the number of wards to 12. CMC Chairperson Devendra Desai informed that the Council has proposed to the Director of Municipal Administration to carve out two news wards from the existing Veroda and Comba-Parricotto wards.
“As per the 2011 Census figures, Cuncolim Municipal Council is entitled for new wards.  Councillors representing the wards of Veroda and Comba have been facing problems due to the large size of the wards,” he said, adding that the resolution will be forwarded to the DMA’s office for approval.
Taking cognisance of the murder of a six-year-old girl at Belatemb, an area located outside the Cuncolim Industrial Estate, the CMC has decided to inspect the entire area in order to crack a whip against illegal structures. “We have been told that a large number of illegal structures have come up at Belatemb. We have today decided to inspect the wards and raze down the illegal structures after issuing show cause notices on the owners,” Desai added.
The Council has resolved to get the sopo tender auctioned by May end so that the new sopo contractor starts his work by June 1. The Council has also decided to file an appeal in the High Court against the Court decision to enhance the land acquisition award pertaining to the acquisition of land for the proposed sewage treatment plant.
