Cuncolkars question unused funds from Golden Jubilee scheme

Despite having funds from the Golden Jubilee scheme to carry out development work in the town, the Cuncolim Municipal Council has neglected their work and ignored the money. Two proposed projects have been frozen for about five years now and there are no signs of progression despite complaints

Cunkolkars have expressed their displeasure and anger over the lethargic attitude of the Cuncolim Municipal Council (CMC). Locals alleged that the present Council has failed to utilize development fund allotted by the government. Five years ago, the CMC received a fund of Rs 2 crore from the Goa Liberation Golden Jubilee Scheme as former CM, Digambar Kamat sanctioned the amount for development projects. The council, however, has failed to utilize these funds. Out of the amount, Rs 1.44 crore is still pending in the coffers of the CMC.
Five years back, former MLA of Cuncolim and Urban Development Minister, Joaquim Alemao, with the help of the council proposed two projects under the Goa Golden Jubilee fund. A health centre cum gymkhana at Madddicoto and a Chieftain’s Memorial Monument at Culwada were planned. The council even published tender notices for both projects as Alemao laid the foundation stones for the projects.
The MLA had instructed contractors to start the work on the projects before the Assembly Elections but the council failed to give the order before the code of conduct of the elections.
Due to the lethargic attitude and negligence on the part of both, the council and the DMA, the money attained from the government remains unused.
The other project in question was the Chieftain’s Memorial. The CMC spent Rs 56 lakhs to construct the monument but it has not yet been inaugurated.
