MARGAO: The Sessions Court in Margao on Tuesday rendered a verdict of culpable homicide not amounting to murder against a mother and her son, for allegedly killing their relative Suryakant Dessai, over a property dispute. The pair has been convicted under IPC Section 304. They were originally charged under Section 302 of the IPC.
The incident unfolded with the arrest of Shevanti, 55, and her son, Hemant Dessai, 28, in relation to the murder of their relative Suryakant Dessai, at Xelvona-Curchorem. According to the Curchorem police, the accused individuals engaged in a quarrel over a property dispute, which escalated into a physical attack. Shevanti and Hemant allegedly struck the deceased with a pick-axe to the back of his head. Hemant fled the scene, while Shevanti was apprehended at her residence after the wife of the deceased lodged a complaint with the police, alleging that her husband had been assaulted by the mother-son duo.
Shevanti, reportedly confessed to the crime during the interrogation.
