CURCHOREM: All the occupants from the old municipal building at Curchorem, which has been declared ‘unsafe’ by PWD Quepem, have agreed to the proposal to demolish the dilapidated building and to construct a new one.
This was decided at a meeting between Curchorem-Cacora Municipal Council (CCMC) and the occupants of the old municipal building on Thursday. The meeting was convened to discuss the proposal to construct a new municipal building near the railway station at Curchorem.
Speaking to Herald after the meeting, Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes said all the stakeholders have agreed to the proposal to construct a new building after demolishing the old one, as the building is in dilapidated condition and not safe to occupy as per the stability report from the PWD (Quepem).
Curchorem MLA Nilesh Cabral told the stakeholders that revised plan with increased FAR from 1 to 1.5 mtrs to give extra area to the occupants has been prepared by GSUDA and sent to Town & Country Planning (TCP) Quepem for approval.
He also assured that the building, which will be ready within one year from the date of demolition, will accommodate all the displaced traders.
“Every one have expressed their satisfaction to the proposal and agreed to build temporary sheds on their own adjacent to the existing building till the completion of new building,” said Fernandes.
According to Fernandes, two months time will be given to the occupants to shift once the final date of actual demolition is decided.
“I want to take all the stakeholders into confidence to avoid any court litigations in future,” informed Fernandes and added that he has conducted survey of all the present shops and measured each area, prepared ground work and got approved from the occupants so that no bogus claims entertained once the rehabilitation starts.
It may be recalled that CCMC had issued notices to 34 occupants from the old municipal building after PWD Quepem declared the building unsafe, to discuss their concern regarding rehabilitation, execute the modalities of lease agreement, etc, before going ahead with the demolition.
