Eight years have passed since construction began on the much-anticipated Curchorem Sports Complex, but instead of serv ing as a hub for athletic activity, the site now resembles a ghost house. Rusted iron structures, corroded internal roads, and an overall weak ened framework pose a serious safe ty hazard. What was envisioned as a modern facility for youth and ath letes has become an eyesore. One key feature of the complex—a large water body—was intended to be a swimming pool. Today, it lies ne glected, resembling a stagnant pond. The indoor stadium is in a similar state of disrepair, overrun by wild grass, and construction materials meant for the project continue to gath er dust in storage rooms. With no se curity or maintenance, the unfinished structure has turned into a shelter for stray animals like dogs and cats. Locals allege that the contractor re sponsible for the construction aban doned the project midway and disap peared, leaving the site in shambles. Frustration is growing in the commu nity, with repeated demands for the government to either complete the pending work or at least take meas ures to restore and secure the decay ing site before it collapses completely.
Speaking to O Heraldo, Councillor Balkrishna Hodarkar of the Curchorem-Cacora Municipal Council (CCMC) ex pressed his disappointment and skepticism. “This was supposed to be the sports complex of Cur chorem. People had high expectations. However, I now feel this project is unnecessary—there is already a sports complex that, if properly renovated, could serve the com munity better. This new construction seems like nothing but a drama to facilitate corruption,” he said. He said, “It raises an important question—should we pay taxes so that those in power can misuse funds for such activities?” Hodarkar added, “If the government truly wants to pro vide facilities to the people, this complex must be complet ed at the earliest. The other sports complex has also been shut down under the pretext of renovation. Right now, our youth have no ground to train or practice.” As the structure continues to decay, the residents of Curchorem await urgent and sincere action from the au thorities. For now, the promise of a vibrant sports facility remains an unfulfilled dream.
